When an organization is initiating its race to excellence
based on EFQM normally you will find a leader with previous experience in the
model, or the organization is part of a community where EFQM has become the
default "management framework". This happens in Europeans education
and health institutions.
But what happens when you are trying to promote the EFQM
model in a territory where there is almost no experience in EFQM, almost no
professionals ready to support the program and there is not a global culture of
competition towards excellence?
This is our challenge day by day trying to implement EFQM
programs in a country such Saudi Arabia, and here are some of the ideas used to
leverage our activities:
- Look for nearby examples: Examples of excellence awards in UAE, Jordan, and Egypt together with the relevance of these awards in those countries, where the head of the state is participating directly in the award ceremony will give a sense of relevance around the excellence program.
- Benchmarking: Provide information about similar organizations working with the EFQM model or really good and recognized organizations in the area working with EFQM model.
- Clarify the difference between Quality and Excellence: In the 99% of our contacts to customers they always understand EFQM as Quality or ISO approach. It's very important to show the different of concept between ISO, quality oriented to the service or product delivered and the holistic EFQM approach.
- Explain the impact in the organization: Explain how the organization will operate and where the organization will find the value of starting an EFQM implementation. Which one will be the required organization to support the new activities related to EFQM and how this implementation will impact their activities?
- Make the model accessible to the new organization (self assessment): From our experience this is the most effective approach. We have realized that we can explain the model, the criteria, the fundamental concepts but nothing is as effective as a real case for let them live what it is an EFQM assessment. We have developed a self-assessment program that allows us to evaluate organizations based on a workshop where we combined a survey with exercises to get initial feedback about strengths and areas for improvement from the 9 criteria. After executing the workshop the organizations are getting their customized feedback report. The customer after executing the self-assessment will have a clear understanding of the value of EFQM as:
- A scientific approach to evaluate an organization.
- The capacity to obtain, during one day workshop, a fair evaluation, highlighting their main strengths and areas for improvement.
- Complete management model, understanding the model, the evaluation criteria and the fundamental concepts of excellence.
- Understanding that an organization that is able to accomplish all the aspects evaluated will be a world class organization.
- Their understanding of the value of EFQM approach not only to measure but as a tool to improve and complement the strategic planning with a very practical tactics.
